Morocco is preparing for a severe cold wave as polar air masses from the Mediterranean descend on the country, causing a sharp drop in temperatures. The National Meteorological Directorate has issued warnings for freezing conditions from Tuesday to Friday, with temperatures expected to range from -8°C to 9°C across various regions.
A low-pressure system over the Mediterranean is driving cold air into northeastern Morocco, resulting in frost, light rain, and isolated snow in mountainous areas. Houssein Youabed, a communication officer with the DGM, informed Hespress that affected regions include the Atlas Mountains, Rif, eastern highlands, and the Mediterranean coast.
Temperatures in the High Atlas could plummet to -6°C, while southeastern slopes and eastern plateaus are expected to hover around 0°C. Coastal areas may experience milder lows of 10°C. Strong winds and occasional sandstorms are also anticipated in southern and coastal areas.
The cold spell, marked by frost and freezing conditions, is expected to persist through midweek, highlighting the need for precautionary measures in affected regions.
