The Moroccan Ministry of Culture has officially included three Jewish landmarks in the city of Asilah on the national heritage list, announced in the official gazette on February 20.
These sites include the historic Kahal synagogue, the Jewish cemetery in Asilah, and a mikveh (ritual bath) along with an oven attached to the synagogue.
Built in 1824, the Kahal synagogue had fallen into a state of disrepair and abandonment for many years before being restored and reopened in 2022, alongside the mikveh and bath.
The inclusion of these sites on the national heritage list follows a request made by the Moroccan Jewish community in January 2024, seeking official recognition of these locations as historical sites.
This decision places these landmarks under the protection of Moroccan laws concerning the preservation of historical sites, monuments, inscriptions, and artifacts.
The move reflects Morocco’s ongoing efforts to protect its rich multicultural heritage and highlights the historical significance of the Jewish presence in the kingdom.
